PREVIEW: PGE Arena, Gdańsk – lessons in stadium design and delivery
Completed in July 2011, the PGE Arena, in Gdańsk, Poland is a worthy landmark for the world-famous city. The 43,000 seat venue hosted four matches during the UEFA Euro 2012 finals this summer.
Designed by RKW Architektur + Städtebau, the stadium’s unique architecture (pictured) illustrates the history and heritage of the local region.
The rich tradition of amber processing in the alleys of the Old Town is reflected in the shape and colour of the stadium’s shell; constructed in a special polycarbonate which, with the help of a sophisticated lighting concept, provides an illuminating effect even from afar.
Meanwhile, the Arena’s supporting structures emulate the ribs and plants famously used by local ship builders to create their ever-so filigree yet extremely durable wooden ships.
The iconic design earned RKW Architektur + Städtebau the Architecture & Design Award at TheStadiumBusiness Awards 2012, in Turin this summer.
And we are delighted to welcome Lukas Hampl, Associate Partner, RKW Architektur + Städtebau to the international speaking line up at TheStadiumBusiness Design & Development Summit 2012, this November to share the firm’s experiences in the design and delivery of the stadium.
“There are many discussions whether for a football stadium design matters or not,” comments Hampl.
“We strongly feel that the power of architecture and the images it can mediate is one of the key factors to establish and maintain a world class venue.”

About the speaker
Lukas Hampl has been with RKW since 2003. With more than fifteen years of professional experience in the field of architecture, his focus rests in project design and general planning.
Before joining RKW he has been working with international architectural firms in Los Angeles, New York, Cologne and Berlin. Lukas holds architectural degrees from the Southern Californian Institute of Architecture and the Berlin University of the Arts.
Hampl was the responsible Project Architect for the PGE Arena Gdansk, and currently overseas various university campus projects in Germany as well as tenders for the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018™

Богатые традиции обработки янтаря в переулках Старого Города нашли свое отражение в форме и цветовой гамме корпуса стадиона. Применен специальный поликарбонат, который, с помощью тщательно продуманной системы освещения, придает объекту эффект свечения даже издалека.
Вместе с тем, несущие конструкции Арены, напоминают шпангоуты и силуэты, широко использованные в судостроении местными мастерами, создававшими филигранные, но чрезвычайно прочные деревянные суда.
Концептуальный дизайн сооружения компании RKWArchitektur + Städtebau был отмечен наградой «За лучшую архитектуру и дизайн 2012 года» на ежегодном мероприятии Награды Бизнеса Стадионов в Турине этим летом.
