SPEAKER PREVIEW: Creating an Accessible Stadium and Matchday Experience
With over 80m disabled people living in Europe, accessible sports stadia are economically attractive, more sustainable and functionally more flexible.
The new ‘UEFA and CAFE Good Practice Guide to Creating an Accessible Stadium and Matchday Experience’ offers practical solutions to delivering high-quality venues that will ensure an inclusive and welcoming fan experience.
Established in 2009, CAFE is a European wide charity with a purpose to achieve equal access to football.
Using the special influence of football, CAFE aims to ensure that many more disabled people can enjoy a football match as an inclusive fan experience and because football embraces diversity in all its forms, to raise disability awareness and the importance of good access more widely throughout the wider UEFA region.
And this November, at TheStadiumBusiness Design & Development Summit 2012, Joyce Cook OBE, Managing Director, Centre for Access to Football in Europe (CAFE), will join the international speaking line up to outline the key features of the Good Practice Guide, and advise the stadium community on how best to design and deliver accessible and inclusive and welcoming stadium matchday experiences.
TheStadiumBusiness Design & Development Summit is a unique event in Europe – aimed at all professionals involved in the design, construction, refurbishment and management of major sports venues.
About the speaker:
Joyce Cook, OBE is the founding and Managing Director of the Centre for Access to Football in Europe (CAFE), a European wide charity supported by UEFA, which aims to improve access for disabled football fans to live matches across Europe and is herself a well-travelled disabled football fan.
She is also Chair of Level Playing Field a charity that campaigns for disabled sports fans in the UK. Joyce was a member of the London 2012 Olympic Delivery Authority’s Built Environment Access Panel and a consultant to LOCOG. She sits on the Football Association Disability Equality Advisory Group and is a special advisor to EPAS, the Council of Europe and other governmental bodies and sits on various diversity and access groups.
Joyce is also active in the wider equality arena as a board member at FARE (Football Against Racism in Europe) and a Director of Women in Football, a UK network of professional women working in and around the football industry who support and champion their peers and aim to improve women’s representation at all levels of the game.
Joyce continues to advise UEFA and FIFA and their partners and is the principal author of the new UEFA and CAFE Good Practice Guide – Access for All. She has been a guest speaker at disability and equality seminars across Europe talking about access to sports stadia and the challenges still faced by many disabled people.
Joyce was awarded an OBE in the 2012 Queen’s new year honours for services to disabled football supporters in the United Kingdom.
