SPEAKER PREVIEW: London 2012 – design, delivery and legacy of the Olympic Park venues
At TheStadiumBusiness Design & Development Summit 2012 (12-14 November), delegates will be given an exclusive insight into the design and delivery of the key venues of the London 2012 Olympic Games; with Kevin Owens, Director, owensowens, the latest leading international expert to be confirmed for the programme for Warsaw.
Prior to founding his own design consultancy, Owens served as Design Principal for the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG).
Joining the LOCOG team shortly after the Bid, Kevin was immediately given the challenge of assessing and realising the ambitious aspirations. During his six years with LOCOG, he lead on the design of the built environment, and provided the strategic direction on the design and overlay for all venues – both Olympic Park and off Park venues.
“In Warsaw, I’ll be highlighting some of the key strategic decisions taken in designing and delivering the Games,” explains Kevin, “giving an overview of the extent of the challenge, and then reviewing and contrasting the approach to three distinct building types – permanent, entirely temporary and hybrid.”
Through strong personal working relationships with the Olympic Delivery Authority and design stakeholders, all parties were able to define a clear design and delivery mechanism for both organisations – ultimately facilitating the creation of a single shared design ethos for London 2012. This manifested itself through the shared design strategy that established a holistic approach to all aspects of the built environment, from architecture and engineering, through to graphics and artwork.
“The key focus of my discussion at the Summit will be on the legacy of what we left behind,” continues Owens, “both physical and in memory – and how to take these equally important elements forward.”

About the speaker
Kevin Owens trained and practiced in architecture prior to his role as Design Principal with the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. As a Fulbright Scholar, his education at Yale University formed the platform for his career within a multi-disciplined design field. Although formally trained as an architect, Kevin’s career path has afforded him great exposure across multiple design disciplines – continually bringing design quality to the forefront of business decision making, whether it be architecture, graphics, art, fashion, product design or landscape.
His professional career has included a wide range of design projects from exhibition and product design to through urban design. His previous projects have included; The Hollywood Bowl redevelopment for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Kensington Oval Cricket Ground Barbados, and Cambridge University Sports Centre, West Campus.
He has an active interest in architectural and design education; most recently facilitating and working with the Royal College of Art on the design of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games medals podia and uniforms. He has previously taught at the Yale University School of Architecture and University of Bath and also lectured extensively on his work at 2012.
Following the completion of his role with London 2012, Kevin recently set up owensowens design consultancy to continue his belief in championing good design and challenging preconceived ideas of process, application and execution. owensowens is a multi discipline design collaborative that works with both clients and designers alike to bring design quality to the forefront of business decision- making, whether it be architecture, graphics, art, product design or landscape.
Kevin is currently writing many press articles based upon his work with 2012 and is regularly invited to speak at international conferences’ and workshops.

“В Варшаве я буду освещать некоторые из ключевых стратегических решений, принятых при разработке и реализации для проведения Игр”,говорит Кевин, “обозревая масштаб стоявших перед нами задач, мы рассмотрим и сопоставим подходы к их решению, учитывая три различных типа зданий – для постоянного, исключительно временного и включающих оба типа использования.”
“Конечно, ключевой акцент будет сделан на наследие Олимпиады, на то, что мы создали – как в материальном смысле, так и в духовном – и как теперь дать дальнейшее развитие этим двум одинаково важным элементам”.
