SPEAKER PREVIEW: Donbass Arena – Lessons in Technology Procurement
The Donbass Arena, in Donetsk, Ukraine (pictured) is one of the most technologically advanced stadiums constructed in recent years.
Designed by Arup Sport, and constructed by Turkish company ENKA, the €320m Arena became the Ukraine’s first UEFA five-star sports stadium when it opened in August 2009. The 52,000-seat home of Shaktar Donetsk FC hosted 5 matches at this year’s UEFA EURO 2012 Finals, including a quarter- and semi-final fixtures, and this month welcomed its 4 millionth visitor through the doors.
Designed to host concerts, conferences, exhibitions and corporate events in addition to football fixtures, the Arena is one of the first in Eastern Europe to incorporate a huge variety of cutting-edge technologies and sophisticated IT applications.
But how did the project team define its technological requirements and go about procurement for a completely new building type in the outer reaches of Europe?
And, three years on from opening, what lessons can be shared for future technology procurement processes for major sporting venues?
We are delighted to welcome Alexander Atamanenko, CEO, Donbass Arena to the international speaking line up at TheStadiumBusiness Design & Development Summit this November to share the Donbass Arena’s lessons in AV/IT procurement and delivery.
About the speaker:
Alexander Atamanenko is CEO of Donbass Arena Ltd. A certified Stadium Director, and a graduate of the Academic Centre of Management, Business and Law at the International Academy of Sciences, Mr. Atamanenko has worked in a managerial capacity since 1997. From 2003, he fulfilled a number of major venue management projects, before being named Operations Director at Stadion Shakhtyor Ltd in February 2008; overseeing the construction of the new stadium.
After the opening of the Donbass Arena – with the spectacular “Grand Show” on 29th of August 2009 – Alexander became Chief Executive Officer of Donbass Arena Ltd.
In 2011 Mr. Atamanenko was involved as programme manager of the celebration events dedicated to FC Shakhtar’s 75th Anniversary, including the celebration Ceremony held at Donbass Arena, on 14 May 2011. The Ceremony won the award for Best Celebratory Event at the Eventia Awards in London. In 2011 Mr. Atamanenko was distinguished with the ‘For Performance & Merit’ medal by President of Ukraine.
In 2010, Atamanenko served as head of the project team during preparation to EURO 2012, and also became a member of the ESSMA (European Stadium & Safety Management Association) Board of Advisors.

Проект архитекторов Arup Sport воплощен в жизнь турецкой строительной компанией ENKA. Арена, строительство которой обошлось в 320 миллионов Евро, стала первым на Украине сооружением, получившим пять звезд от УЕФА на церемонии открытия в августе 2009 года. Домашняя арена Футбольного Клуба Шахтер, вмещающая 52000 зрителей, приняла 5 матчей финальных игр ЕВРО-2012 УЕФА, в том числе четвертьфиналы и полуфиналы, а в этом месяце Арена впустила и приветствовала своего 4-миллионного посетителя.
Предназначенная для проведения концертов, конференций, выставок и корпоративных мероприятий в дополнение к футбольным состязаниям, Арена является одним из первых в Восточной Европе сооружений, которое укомплектовано огромным разнообразием передовых технологий и сложными ИТ-приложениями.
Но как, же команда проекта, смогла определить технологические потребности и снабдить сооружение совершенно нового типа, в таком отдалении от Европы?
Какими выводами можно поделиться спустя три года с момента открытия, с теми, кто только планирует оборудовать технологически сложные системы будущих крупных спортивных сооружений?
Мы рады приветствовать Александра Атаманенко, Генерального Директора Донбасс Арены в числе докладчиков международного уровня на Саммите Стадионов «Дизайн и Девелопмент» в ноябре этого года, который поделится полученными при строительстве Донбасс Арены уроками, по вопросу закупок аудиовизуальных и информационных технологий.
