SPEAKER PREVIEW: Better by Design – Applying Thematic and Operational Design in Venues

Delegates in Warsaw this November will explore how design can add to the functionality of venues; with Richard Jeffery the latest leading international expert to join the speaking programme for TheStadiumBusiness Design & Development Summit.

Jeffery is CEO of the Counties Manukau Pacific Trust which raised $50 million dollars in funding to develop and operate the TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre in Manukau City, New Zealand. The award winning project (pictured, above) consists of a 700 seat theatre and 3,000 seat arena all encompassed in one iconic structure.

The Centre opened on time and within budget in April 2005 and is one of New Zealand’s success stories; trading on a cash positive basis from opening day. Now, resource consents and business plans for stage 2 (“Wero”) are in place for what will be a project of international significance.

In Warsaw, Jeffery – who ‘spearheaded’ the concept and development of the Centre from a green field site 10 years ago – will explore how applying thematic and operational design can not only make venues more functional; but, crucially, enhance their commercial viability.

“The TelstraClear Pacific is much more than just an events centre,” explains Jeffery (pictured, right).

“We consider The Centre to be a ‘living expression’ of Pacific arts and culture – one that represents the important themes of a diverse, young, and exciting nation.”

The venue was designed and built around the overall theme “The Coming Together As One”; a ‘philosophical framework’ that helped to guide decision making across the venue’s architecture, art and landscape.

“Our ‘theme’ is culturally relevant,” continues Jeffery. “And is a result of the journey taken by all who arrive in Manukau and gather together to celebrate our achievements and diversity. In implementing this theme within the venue, we believe we’ve helped to foster a real sense of ownership, belonging and communality.”

“As I’ll be discussing in Warsaw, I think that it is vital that the design of a venue reflects its locality, in order to get the buy-in of the local community.”

“Further, I believe that there are a number of KPI’s that should be used to assess the design of a building, from an operational perspective. I look forward to sharing these at The Summit in November.”
