2013 Winners In Focus – Sydney Cricket Ground

Sports Event of The Year: As part of our Stadium Business Awards 2013 ‘Winners In Focus’ series we take a look at Sydney Cricket Ground who won the Sports Event of the Year 2013 – for the hosting of their 100th Test Match.

The past two Sports Event of the Year Award winners were FIFA World Cup Final in South Africa and the UEFA Champions League Final at Wembley Stadium.

The SCG became only the third ground worldwide to have hosted 100 cricket Tests when Australia defeated India by an innings and 68 runs. The match was highlighted by the record-breaking innings of 329 not out played by Australian captain Michael Clarke, and the twin centuries made by Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey.

The Judging Panel remarked; “Proving that it’s not just new venues – or one-off events – that define a venue’s ‘greatness’ but fundamentally it’s about longevity. When we talk about stadiums have a lifespan of 20-30 years these days, it took SCG 130 years to reach its landmark 100th Test – a milestone event (shared by very few other venues) that’s a deserved winner.”

SCG Trust Chief Executive, Mr Jamie Barkley, said the Award was a credit to all SCG staff, Members, the Australian and Indian cricket teams, Cricket Australia and to cricket fans.

“This Award is shared by all who participated and attended the SCG’s 100th Test. It was milestone event in the history of the SCG and in world cricket and we are proud that it has been independently recognised by a panel of experts.”
